Zebrano (Microberlinia brazzavillensis) is an exotic hardwood from Central Africa, instantly recognisable for its bold striped appearance of pale golden-yellow sapwood contrasted with dark brown streaks. It has a coarse texture and generally interlocked grain, which creates its characteristic dramatic figure but can also make machining somewhat challenging. The wood is moderately hard, fairly strong, and reasonably stable when properly dried, though it can be prone to movement if not carefully handled during seasoning.
In the timber industry, Zebrano is primarily used for decorative and high-impact visual applications rather than structural work. It is widely specified for luxury veneers, high-end furniture, cabinetry, interior panelling and feature surfaces, as well as musical instruments and bespoke design pieces. Its striking "zebra-like" grain makes it especially popular in contemporary interiors where bold natural patterning is desired, often used as an accent wood to create contrast and visual interest.
