Wenge (Millettia laurentii) is a very dense tropical hardwood native to Central Africa, recognised for its dark brown to nearly black colour with coarse, contrasting grain and fine black streaks. The wood is extremely hard, heavy and strong, with excellent wear resistance and good dimensional stability once properly dried. Its interlocked grain can make machining challenging, and its high density means it can be abrasive on tools, but it finishes well to a smooth, dramatic surface. The timber's naturally dark appearance often requires minimal staining, as its inherent colour is one of its key aesthetic features.

In the timber industry, Wenge is highly valued for luxury and architectural applications where a bold, contemporary look is desired. It is commonly used for high-end furniture, flooring, staircases, veneers, panelling and interior joinery. Its durability and striking appearance also make it popular in bespoke design projects and statement pieces. Due to its strength and visual impact, Wenge is often specified in modern interiors seeking contrast and sophistication, particularly when paired with lighter woods or materials.
