- Moderately durable
English Walnut (Juglans regia) is a highly regarded European hardwood known for its attractive, often richly varied colour ranging from pale grey-brown to deep chocolate tones, sometimes with striking dark streaks or figured patterns such as burr or ripple. It has a generally straight grain with a fine to medium texture, and a natural lustre that gives it an elegant appearance when finished. The timber is moderately hard, stable, and works well with both hand and machine tools, producing smooth, clean surfaces and taking polish exceptionally well.
In the timber industry, English Walnut is primarily used for high-quality decorative applications where appearance is paramount. It is widely specified for fine furniture, cabinetry, veneers, gunstocks, musical instruments and luxury interior joinery. Particularly prized figured pieces are used for statement furniture and bespoke design work. Its combination of workability, rich colour variation and natural elegance makes it one of the most desirable temperate hardwoods for premium craftsmanship.
