Walnut – Black

  • North America
  • Hardwood
  • Very durable

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a highly prized North American hardwood known for its rich chocolate-brown heartwood, often featuring darker streaks and occasional purplish tones. It has a straight, occasionally wavy grain and a fine to medium texture, giving it a smooth and refined appearance when finished. The timber is moderately hard yet relatively lightweight for a hardwood, offering good dimensional stability and excellent workability. It machines, carves and sands well, and takes finishes beautifully, enhancing its natural depth of colour and figure.

In the timber industry, Black Walnut is widely used in high-end furniture, cabinetry, veneers and architectural joinery where a luxurious, natural aesthetic is desired. It is also popular for gunstocks, musical instruments, flooring and interior panelling. Its combination of strength, stability and rich visual character makes it a staple in bespoke and luxury design work, often specified where warmth and elegance are key design requirements.
