Utile (Entandrophragma utile), also known as sipo mahogany, is a large African hardwood valued for its attractive appearance and reliable working properties. It typically ranges in colour from pale pinkish-brown to deeper reddish-brown, often darkening with age. The timber has a medium to coarse texture and an interlocked grain, which can produce a subtle ribbon figure on quarter-sawn surfaces. It is moderately durable, with good strength and stability, though it can be prone to movement if not carefully dried.
In the timber industry, Utile is widely used as a substitute for genuine mahogany in both interior and exterior applications. It is commonly specified for high-quality furniture, cabinetry, doors, joinery and decorative veneers, as well as panelling and flooring. Its combination of attractive appearance, workability and availability has made it a popular choice for architectural joinery and commercial interiors, particularly where a warm, mahogany-like finish is desired at a more accessible cost.
