Teak

  • Myanmar, Southern Asia, Indonesia
  • Hardwood
  • Very durable

Teak (Tectona grandis) is one of the world's most highly regarded tropical hardwoods, valued for its golden-brown colour, straight grain and naturally oily texture. It is exceptionally durable and possesses outstanding resistance to moisture, decay, fungi and insect attack, making it well suited to demanding environments. Teak is moderately dense, stable in service and easy to work despite its high silica content, and it weathers attractively when left untreated.

In the timber industry, teak is widely used in premium applications where longevity and appearance are paramount. It is renowned for marine and boatbuilding uses, including decking and interior fittings, and is also popular for high-end furniture, flooring, exterior joinery, cladding and luxury architectural projects. Its natural weather resistance makes it especially suitable for outdoor furniture and landscaping, while its rich colour and fine finish have ensured its continued popularity in both traditional and contemporary design.
