- Durable
Tatajuba (Bagassa guianensis) is a durable tropical hardwood native to northern South America, recognised for its golden-yellow to yellow-brown colour, which darkens with age. It has a medium to coarse texture, an interlocked grain, and excellent natural resistance to decay, fungi and insect attack. The wood is dense, hard and strong, offering good dimensional stability and weathering performance, although its density can make machining more demanding and may require pre-boring for nails and screws.
In the timber industry, Tatajuba is valued for both interior and exterior applications where durability is essential. It is widely used for decking, heavy construction, marine work, exterior joinery, flooring, cladding and outdoor furniture. Its attractive colour and resistance to moisture also make it suitable for high-quality furniture and architectural joinery. Because of its strength and longevity, Tatajuba is often considered an alternative to more traditional tropical hardwoods such as teak and ipe.
