Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) is a pale cream to light golden hardwood prized for its fine, even texture and subtle grain. It is moderately hard and strong, with good resistance to wear and excellent machining properties, making it easy to plane, turn and finish. The timber dries relatively well with minimal distortion and takes stains and polishes smoothly, although its naturally light colour is often preserved to highlight its clean appearance.
In the timber industry, sycamore is valued for high-quality interior applications and decorative work. It is commonly used for furniture, cabinetry, veneers, flooring, mouldings and turned items, as well as musical instruments and kitchen utensils where its close grain and lack of odour are beneficial. Because of its attractive appearance and workability, sycamore is also widely used in bespoke joinery and specialist craft applications.
