Spruce – Sitka
- North America
- Softwood
- Non-durable
Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) is a lightweight, pale-coloured softwood native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. It typically ranges from creamy white to light yellowish-brown and has a fine, even texture with a straight, uniform grain. The wood has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and is valued for its stiffness and resilience despite its low density. It machines and works very well, producing a clean finish, but it has low natural durability and is not suitable for exposed exterior use without treatment.
In the timber industry, Sitka spruce is widely used for structural timber, aircraft construction, musical instruments (particularly soundboards for pianos and guitars), and engineered wood products such as laminates and glulam. It is also used for interior joinery, light framing, mouldings and general carpentry where strength and lightness are important. Its combination of low weight, strength and acoustic properties makes it especially valuable in specialist engineering and musical applications.
