Spruce – European whitewood

European Spruce (Whitewood) (Picea abies) is a lightweight, pale-coloured softwood widely distributed across northern and central Europe. It typically has a creamy white to pale yellow appearance with a fine, even texture and a straight, uniform grain. The wood is relatively soft with a good strength-to-weight ratio and excellent workability, making it easy to saw, plane and machine. However, it has low natural durability and is not resistant to decay or insect attack, so it is generally used in dry or protected environments unless treated.
In the timber industry, European whitewood is one of the most important construction softwoods and is widely used for structural framing, roof trusses, flooring, interior joinery and general carpentry. It is also a key material for plywood, engineered wood products, musical instruments (particularly soundboards in string instruments), packaging and mouldings. Its consistency, availability and cost-effectiveness make it a staple timber in both residential and commercial construction across Europe.
