Seraya – dark Red

  • South East Asia
  • Hardwood
  • Moderately durable

Dark Red Seraya (a trade name for several Southeast Asian Shorea species) is a medium-density tropical hardwood commonly sourced from Malaysia and Indonesia. It typically ranges in colour from deep reddish-brown to dark red tones, often darkening further with age. The grain is usually straight to slightly interlocked with a moderately coarse texture. The wood is relatively easy to machine, glue and finish, and offers fair dimensional stability when properly seasoned. However, its natural durability is generally low to moderate, meaning it is best suited to interior or protected applications unless treated.

In the timber industry, Dark Red Seraya is widely used for interior joinery, furniture, panelling, mouldings and veneers, as well as for plywood and general construction applications. It is also commonly specified for window frames, doors and lightweight structural components where a workable and cost-effective hardwood is required. Its availability and ease of processing make it a versatile choice in both commercial and residential projects, particularly where a warm-toned hardwood appearance is desired.
