Rosewood – Honduras
- Central America
- Hardwood
- Very durable
Honduran Rosewood (Dalbergia stevensonii) is a dense, fine-textured tropical hardwood native to Central America, highly prized for its rich colour and excellent working properties. It typically ranges from deep purplish-brown to reddish-brown, often with darker streaks that enhance its decorative appeal. The grain is usually straight to slightly interlocked, with a smooth, even texture that polishes to a high natural lustre. The wood is very hard, strong and stable, with excellent dimensional stability and good natural durability, though it can be challenging to machine due to its density and silica content.
In the timber industry, Honduran rosewood is primarily used for high-end specialty applications such as musical instruments, fine furniture, veneers, turnery and luxury cabinetry. It is especially valued in the production of marimbas, xylophones and other percussion instruments due to its acoustic properties. It is also used for decorative inlay work and bespoke woodworking, where its rich colour and fine finish are highly sought after. Because of its rarity and conservation status, it is typically reserved for small-scale, premium applications rather than general construction.
