Purpleheart
- Central and South America
- Hardwood
- Very durable
Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) is a dense tropical hardwood native to Central and South America, renowned for its striking colour change. When freshly cut, the heartwood is a dull greyish-brown, but on exposure to light and air it develops a vivid purple tone that can deepen to a rich violet or aubergine over time. The grain is typically straight, though it can be interlocked, with a fine to medium texture. Purpleheart is very hard, strong and highly durable, with excellent resistance to wear, decay and insect attack, but it can be challenging to machine due to its density and tendency to dull tools.
In the timber industry, Purpleheart is used for high-end decorative and demanding applications where both durability and appearance are important. It is commonly specified for furniture, flooring, veneers, cabinetry, turnery and specialty joinery, as well as for inlay work and luxury interior features. It is also used in heavy-wear applications such as tool handles, flooring strips and even some marine or outdoor projects where its strength and weather resistance are advantageous. Its distinctive colour makes it especially popular in statement pieces and contemporary design.
