European Black Poplar (Populus nigra) is a lightweight to medium-density hardwood native to Europe and parts of western Asia. It typically has a pale cream to light brown heartwood, sometimes with darker streaks or a slightly greyish tone, and a clearly defined lighter sapwood. The grain is generally straight with a fine, even texture, making it easy to machine, cut and finish. The wood is relatively soft and light, with good dimensional stability in dry conditions, but it has low natural durability and is susceptible to decay and insect attack if exposed.

In the timber industry, European black poplar is mainly used for interior joinery, furniture components, mouldings, plywood and packaging materials. It is also widely used in match production, lightweight construction, carving and utility applications where ease of machining and low weight are important. Because it accepts paint and coatings well, it is often selected for painted furniture and concealed structural elements in interior design and manufacturing.
