Plum wood (Prunus domestica and related Prunus species) is a dense, fine-grained hardwood valued for its rich colour and decorative appeal. It typically ranges from pale pinkish-brown to deep reddish-purple or dark brown, often darkening with age and exposure. The grain is generally straight but can be slightly wavy or figured, with a smooth, fine texture that polishes exceptionally well. Plum is a hard, heavy timber for its size, offering good strength and excellent carving properties, though it is not naturally durable in damp or outdoor environments.

In the timber industry, plum is used mainly for high-quality decorative and specialist applications rather than structural work. It is commonly employed in fine furniture, veneers, turnery, inlay work, musical instruments and small luxury objects such as knife handles, boxes and ornamental pieces. Its attractive colour variation and ability to take a high polish make it particularly valued in bespoke woodworking and artisanal craft applications.
