Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) refers to a group of dense, strong softwoods from the southeastern United States, including species such as Pinus taeda (loblolly pine), Pinus palustris (longleaf pine) and related pines. It typically ranges in colour from pale yellow to orange-brown, often with a pronounced grain and visible growth rings. The wood is relatively heavy for a softwood, with high strength, stiffness and hardness compared to many other pines. It machines and nails well, though its resin content can vary, and it has low natural durability unless treated.

In the timber industry, Southern Yellow Pine is widely used for structural construction, framing, beams, joists, flooring and engineered wood products such as glulam and laminated veneer lumber. It is also commonly used for decking, railway sleepers, utility poles and heavy-duty outdoor applications when pressure-treated for durability. Its strength and cost-effectiveness make it one of the most important construction softwoods in North America and export markets.
