Pine – Pitch

  • North America
  • Softwood
  • Moderately durable

Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida, often also including related resin-rich pines historically grouped under this trade name) is a dense, resinous softwood native to North America. It typically ranges in colour from yellowish-brown to deep reddish-brown, often darkening with age. The wood has a straight to slightly irregular grain with a medium texture and is notable for its high resin content ("pitch"), which contributes to its durability and water resistance. It is stronger and harder than many common pines, though the resin can make machining and finishing more challenging.

In the timber industry, Pitch Pine has traditionally been used for heavy construction, flooring, beams, railway sleepers, shipbuilding and utility timber where strength and wear resistance are important. It has also been used for joinery, millwork and industrial applications, particularly in environments requiring durable softwood performance. While less common in modern large-scale construction, it is still valued in restoration work and specialist applications where its distinctive character and robustness are required.
