Pine – European Redwood

  • Europe
  • Softwood
  • Non-durable

European Redwood Pine (Pinus sylvestris), commonly known simply as Scots pine, is a widely distributed softwood across Europe and northern Asia. It typically has a pale yellow to reddish-brown heartwood with a clearly defined lighter sapwood. The grain is generally straight with a medium to coarse texture, and the wood often contains visible knots that add character. It is moderately lightweight, easy to work, and machines and finishes well, although its natural durability is low to moderate and it requires treatment for exposed exterior use.

In the timber industry, European redwood pine is extensively used for construction, joinery, flooring, furniture, panelling and mouldings. It is also widely employed in structural framing, roofing, doors and windows, as well as in plywood, packaging and general carpentry. Its combination of availability, affordability and versatility makes it one of the most important softwoods in European construction and manufacturing, particularly for both domestic and commercial building applications.
