Pearwood (Pyrus communis and related Pyrus species) is a fine, dense hardwood known for its smooth texture and subtle, uniform appearance. It typically ranges from pale pinkish-brown to light reddish-brown, often darkening slightly with age. The grain is generally straight and very even, with a fine, consistent texture that allows for excellent detail in machining and carving. Pearwood is stable, strong for its size, and takes a very smooth finish, making it highly suitable for precision woodworking, though it is not naturally durable in damp or outdoor conditions.
In the timber industry, pearwood is primarily used for fine turnery, carving, musical instruments, veneers and high-quality decorative joinery. It is especially valued in traditional crafts, including rulers, engraving blocks, scientific instruments and luxury small objects where precision and a flawless surface are required. Its ability to hold fine detail and its understated appearance also make it popular for inlay work and bespoke furniture components.
