Padauk
- Africa
- Hardwood
- Very durable
Padauk (commonly Pterocarpus soyauxii and related Pterocarpus species) is a vibrant tropical hardwood native to West and Central Africa and parts of Asia. It is best known for its striking reddish-orange to deep red heartwood, which darkens to a rich reddish-brown with exposure to light. The grain is typically straight to interlocked with a medium to coarse texture. Padauk is dense, strong and very stable once seasoned, with good natural durability and resistance to decay and insects. It machines well, though its high pigment content can sometimes stain surrounding materials during working.
In the timber industry, Padauk is widely used for high-quality furniture, cabinetry, flooring, veneers and interior joinery where its bold colour is a key design feature. It is also popular for turned objects, musical instrument components, decorative panelling and specialty woodworking. Because of its vivid appearance and excellent working properties, it is often chosen for statement pieces and luxury interiors, although its colour will gradually mellow over time to a darker brownish tone.
