Opepe
- Africa
- Hardwood
- Very durable
Opepe (Nauclea diderrichii) is a heavy, durable tropical hardwood native to West and Central Africa. It typically ranges in colour from yellowish-brown to golden brown, often darkening with age to a deeper brown. The grain is usually interlocked with a medium to coarse texture, and the wood has a high natural resistance to decay, fungi and insect attack, particularly in wet conditions. Opepe is strong, tough and moderately hard, with good overall stability once seasoned, although its interlocked grain can make machining and finishing more challenging.
In the timber industry, Opepe is widely used for heavy-duty exterior and structural applications such as marine construction, bridge building, railway sleepers, decking and dock work. It is also specified for outdoor joinery, fencing and industrial flooring where long-term durability in exposed environments is required. Due to its strength and resistance to moisture, it is often chosen as a cost-effective alternative to other high-durability tropical hardwoods in demanding civil engineering projects.
