Olivewood (Olea europaea) is a dense, fine-textured hardwood native to the Mediterranean region, highly prized for its dramatic and decorative appearance. It typically ranges in colour from pale golden yellow to deep brown, often with striking dark streaks and irregular grain patterns caused by the tree's slow growth and twisting form. The wood is very hard and heavy, with a fine, even texture and a naturally smooth finish when polished. It machines well with care but can be prone to movement and checking if not properly seasoned due to its density and irregular grain.
In the timber industry, olivewood is used primarily for high-end decorative and specialty applications rather than structural work. It is widely employed in luxury furniture, veneers, cabinetry, turned objects and fine joinery, as well as for small ornamental items such as bowls, knife handles and inlay work. Its distinctive figure and rich colour variations make it especially valued in bespoke design and artisanal woodworking, where visual character is a key requirement.
