European Oak (Quercus robur / Quercus petraea) refers to freshly sawn (green oak), milled as, waney edge (live edge) or square edge timber, that is specifically selected for structural use, typically retaining higher moisture content at the point of supply. It is a heavy, strong hardwood with a coarse, ring-porous grain and a light to medium brown colour that will naturally darken and develop character as it seasons in service. In its green state, it is easier to work than fully seasoned oak, allowing traditional timber framing techniques such as mortise and tenon joinery to be used effectively. As it dries in place, it undergoes natural movement and splitting, which is expected and accommodated in traditional construction.

In the timber industry, this grade is primarily used for green oak framing, barn construction, pergolas, bridges, garden structures and restoration-style timber buildings. It is also widely used in heritage and contemporary oak frame architecture, where traditional aesthetics and long-term performance are required. Its strength, durability and ability to season in situ make it a preferred material for structural carpentry, particularly in exposed timber frameworks where ageing and weathering are part of the natural process.
