Oak – European

European Oak (Quercus robur and Quercus petraea) is a strong, heavy and highly durable hardwood widely distributed across Europe. It typically ranges in colour from light golden brown to medium brown, often darkening with age, and features a prominent ring-porous grain with a coarse texture. The wood has excellent strength, hardness and wear resistance, along with good natural durability due to its high tannin content. It machines well but can be demanding because of its density and interlocked grain, and it finishes to a rich, traditional appearance.

In the timber industry, European oak is one of the most important hardwoods and is widely used for furniture, flooring, interior joinery, doors and cabinetry. It is also heavily used in structural applications such as beams, timber framing and restoration work in historic buildings. In addition, it is a key material for barrels and cooperage, particularly in wine and whisky production, as well as for veneers and high-end architectural millwork where strength, durability and aesthetic appeal are essential.
