English Oak (Quercus robur, and closely related Quercus petraea) is a heavy, strong and highly durable European hardwood. It typically ranges in colour from light to medium golden-brown, often darkening with age, and has a prominent ring-porous grain with a coarse, open texture. The wood is tough, hard and very resistant to wear, with excellent natural durability due to its high tannin content. It machines well but can be demanding because of its density and interlocked grain, and it responds well to finishing when properly prepared.
In the timber industry, English oak is widely used for high-quality furniture, flooring, structural timber, interior joinery and architectural millwork. It is also extensively used in traditional construction, including timber framing, beams and restoration work in historic buildings. In addition, it is valued for exterior applications such as doors, gates and cladding, as well as for cooperage in barrels used for wine and spirits. Its combination of strength, durability and cultural significance makes it one of the most important hardwoods in Europe.
