Oak – English – 'PIPPY' – Epicormic knots

English Oak 'Pippy' (Epicormic Knots) refers to English oak (Quercus robur / Quercus petraea) featuring clusters of small, tight knots formed by epicormic shoots. These "pippy" formations create a highly decorative, speckled or burred appearance across the grain, often set within the oak's typical golden to medium brown heartwood. The wood retains oak's characteristic coarse texture, prominent ring-porous structure and high tannin content, along with its strength, hardness and excellent natural durability. The presence of knots and irregular grain can make machining more challenging, but it adds significant visual character.

In the timber industry, pippy oak is primarily used for decorative and high-end applications where appearance is the main focus. It is widely specified for bespoke furniture, cabinetry, veneers, panelling and interior joinery, particularly in luxury and traditional design schemes. It is also used for feature walls, statement pieces and architectural detailing where its natural patterning can be showcased. While still structurally sound, it is generally reserved for non-structural or design-led uses due to the irregular grain and knot distribution.
