Oak – American – White

  • North America
  • Hardwood
  • Durable

American White Oak (Quercus alba) is a strong, heavy hardwood native to North America, known for its durability and closed-grain structure. It typically ranges in colour from light to medium brown with olive or grey undertones, and has a more uniform, tighter pore structure than red oak. The grain is usually straight, with a coarse texture, and the wood offers excellent strength, hardness and very good natural resistance to decay due to its high tyloses content, which helps block moisture movement. It machines and finishes well, though it can be demanding due to its density.

In the timber industry, American white oak is highly valued for furniture, flooring, cabinetry, interior joinery and architectural millwork. It is also widely used for barrels and cooperage, particularly in whisky and wine production, due to its ability to impart flavour and resist liquid penetration. In addition, it is specified for exterior joinery, boatbuilding, veneers and high-end construction applications where strength, durability and a premium appearance are required.
