Oak – American – RED

- Non-durable
American Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is a strong, medium-to-heavy hardwood native to North America. It typically has a light to medium reddish-brown heartwood with a paler sapwood, and a prominent open grain with a coarse, ring-porous structure. The wood is hard, stiff and has good strength properties, but it is more porous than white oak, making it less naturally resistant to moisture. It machines well and finishes nicely, though the open pores often require filling for smooth surface finishes.
In the timber industry, American red oak is widely used for furniture, flooring, cabinetry, interior joinery and doors. It is particularly popular in traditional and contemporary furniture making due to its strength, availability and attractive grain pattern. It is also used for veneers, mouldings and millwork, as well as in general construction applications where a strong, reliable hardwood is needed for interior use.
