Meranti – Light Red

  • South East Asia
  • Hardwood
  • Moderately durable

Light Red Meranti (a trade grouping of several Shorea species from Southeast Asia) is a medium to lightweight tropical hardwood. It typically ranges in colour from pale pinkish-red to light reddish-brown, often darkening slightly with age. The grain is usually straight to slightly interlocked with a moderately coarse texture. The wood is relatively easy to machine, glue and finish, and offers fair dimensional stability when properly dried. However, its natural durability is generally low, making it best suited to interior or protected uses unless treated.

In the timber industry, Light Red Meranti is widely used for interior joinery, furniture, panelling, mouldings and veneers, as well as for plywood and general carpentry. It is also commonly specified for window frames, doors and lightweight construction components, particularly in cost-sensitive projects where a consistent and workable hardwood is required. Its ease of machining and availability make it one of the most widely used tropical hardwood groups in global timber markets.
