Makore

  • Africa
  • Hardwood
  • Very durable

Makore (Tieghemella heckelii) is a medium to heavy tropical hardwood native to West and Central Africa. It typically has a pinkish to reddish-brown heartwood that darkens with age, sometimes developing a richer mahogany-like tone. The grain is usually straight, though it can be interlocked or slightly wavy, with a fine, even texture that gives a smooth finish. Makore is strong, stable and moderately durable, with good resistance to wear, although it is not among the most highly decay-resistant tropical hardwoods.

In the timber industry, Makore is widely used for high-quality furniture, cabinetry, interior joinery and veneers, where its warm colour and fine grain are appreciated. It is also used for flooring, panelling, doors and decorative architectural millwork, as well as in boat interiors and turned components. Its attractive appearance and good working properties make it a popular choice for premium interior applications, particularly where a mahogany-like aesthetic is desired.
