Mahogany – African

  • Africa
  • Hardwood
  • Moderately durable

African Mahogany (commonly Khaya spp., such as Khaya ivorensis and related species) is a medium-density tropical hardwood native to West and Central Africa. It typically ranges in colour from pale pinkish-brown to rich reddish-brown, often darkening attractively with age. The grain is usually interlocked or slightly wavy with a medium texture, giving it a characteristic ribbon figure when quarter-sawn. The wood machines and finishes well, offering good dimensional stability, though its natural durability varies by species and is generally moderate rather than exceptional.

In the timber industry, African mahogany is widely used for furniture, cabinetry, interior joinery, doors, veneers and panelling. It is especially valued as a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to genuine mahogany (Swietenia spp.) in architectural and furniture applications. It is also used for boat interiors, mouldings and decorative millwork, where its attractive appearance and workability make it suitable for high-quality interior design projects.
