Lignum Vitae

  • Central America
  • Hardwood
  • Very durable

Lignum Vitae (Guaiacum officinale / Guaiacum sanctum) is one of the densest and hardest timbers in the world, native to the Caribbean and northern South America. It has a dark greenish-brown to almost black heartwood, often with interlaced streaks, and a fine, oily texture. The wood is extremely heavy, strong and naturally self-lubricating due to its high resin content (guaiac resin), giving it exceptional wear resistance. It also has outstanding natural durability and resistance to decay, insects and marine borers, making it highly suitable for demanding environments.

In the timber industry, Lignum Vitae has traditionally been used for specialist engineering and marine applications rather than general construction. It is commonly used for ship propeller shaft bearings, pulley wheels, bushings, mallet heads, bowling balls and other high-wear mechanical components. Because of its rarity, cost and conservation status, it is now largely reserved for niche restoration work and specialised industrial applications where its unique self-lubricating and wear-resistant properties are essential.
