LAUAN – RED

  • Philippines
  • Hardwood
  • Moderately durable

Red Lauan refers to a group of Southeast Asian hardwoods commonly from the Shorea genus (often marketed as meranti-type timbers). It is typically reddish-brown in colour with a moderately coarse texture and a straight to slightly interlocked grain. The wood is light to medium in density, relatively easy to machine, and generally stable in service when properly dried. However, its natural durability is low to moderate, meaning it is not well suited to exposed exterior conditions without treatment.

In the timber industry, Red Lauan is widely used for interior joinery, panelling, mouldings, furniture components and general carpentry. It is especially common in plywood manufacture, veneers and light construction applications due to its workability and availability. While it is not typically chosen for structural or outdoor use, it remains a cost-effective and versatile timber for interior applications where appearance, ease of machining and consistent supply are important.
