Larch – European
- Europe
- Softwood
- Moderately durable
European Larch (Larix decidua) is a durable softwood native to central and southern Europe. It has a distinctive reddish-brown heartwood with a pale sapwood, and a straight grain with a moderately coarse texture. The wood is relatively dense and strong for a softwood, offering good structural performance and natural resistance to decay due to its resin content. It machines well overall, though the resin can sometimes affect finishing, and it performs best when properly seasoned to improve stability.
In the timber industry, European Larch is widely used for exterior joinery, cladding, fencing, decking and structural applications such as beams and framing. It is also used in flooring, roofing and general construction where durability and strength are required. Its natural weather resistance makes it suitable for outdoor use without heavy chemical treatment, and it is often chosen for traditional and modern architectural projects where a warm, characterful appearance is desired.
