Keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.) is a medium to heavy tropical hardwood widely sourced from Southeast Asia. It typically ranges in colour from reddish-brown to dark brown, often darkening with age, and has a coarse texture with a straight to interlocked grain. The wood is strong and relatively hard, with good structural performance, but it contains natural resins that can sometimes make machining and finishing more difficult. Keruing has moderate durability and fair resistance to wear, though it is less stable than premium hardwoods and can be prone to movement if not properly seasoned.

In the timber industry, Keruing is commonly used for heavy construction, flooring, decking, railway sleepers, formwork and general structural applications. It is also used in marine and outdoor environments where cost-effective durability is required, particularly for industrial decking and utility structures. In lower grades, it may be used for plywood, pallets and packaging, while higher-grade material is selected for flooring and joinery where strength is more important than appearance.
