Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a very hard, heavy and fine-textured European hardwood often compared to beech in appearance but even denser and tougher in performance. It is typically pale cream to light brown in colour with a subtle silver sheen and a straight, sometimes slightly interlocked grain. The wood has excellent shock resistance, very high compressive strength and a fine, uniform texture. It machines well when sharp tools are used, but its density can make it challenging to work, and it is not naturally durable in damp conditions.

In the timber industry, hornbeam is mainly used for applications requiring hardness and wear resistance rather than appearance. It is commonly used for tool handles, mallet heads, machine parts, flooring blocks, butcher's blocks and wooden cogs or gears in traditional machinery. It is also used in turnery and engineering components where strength and resistance to impact are essential. Its combination of toughness and fine grain makes it a specialist hardwood for demanding, high-wear interior uses.
