Holly

Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is a fine-textured hardwood best known for its exceptionally pale, almost white heartwood, which is one of the lightest-coloured natural timbers available. It has a very fine, even grain with a smooth texture and minimal visible figure, though it can occasionally show subtle grain patterns. Holly is relatively hard and dense for its size, machines cleanly and takes detail very well, but it is not naturally durable and is best suited to dry, interior environments. It also dries slowly and must be carefully seasoned to avoid distortion.

In the timber industry, Holly is primarily used for decorative and specialist applications rather than structural work. It is highly valued for inlay, marquetry, turnery, engraving and fine furniture detailing, where its pale colour provides strong contrast against darker woods. It is also used for musical instrument components, carving and small luxury items, particularly where a clean, uniform white appearance is required or where it is dyed to imitate ebony in traditional decorative work.
