Hemlock (commonly Western Hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla) is a light-coloured softwood native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. It ranges from pale creamy white to light straw-brown and has a fine, even texture with a generally straight grain. The wood is relatively lightweight with moderate strength and good dimensional stability. It machines and finishes well, although it has little natural resistance to decay or insect attack and is best suited to dry, protected environments or treated applications.
In the timber industry, Hemlock is widely used for interior construction, framing, joinery, mouldings, doors and general carpentry. It is also a common material for plywood, veneers and engineered wood products due to its uniform texture and ease of processing. In some cases, it is used for light structural applications and packaging, while higher-grade material may be selected for furniture components and interior panelling where a clean, consistent appearance is desired.
