Elm – EUROPEAN – DECORATIVE

  • Europe
  • Hardwood
  • Non-durable

European Elm (Decorative) refers to selected figured forms of Ulmus species such as Ulmus glabra and Ulmus procera, chosen for their attractive grain patterns rather than standard utility-grade timber. These decorative logs often show striking ripple, curl or fiddleback figure, with a light to medium brown heartwood and a paler sapwood. The wood retains elm's characteristic interlocking grain and coarse texture, giving it both visual movement and good toughness. While it remains strong and resistant to splitting, it is not naturally durable and requires protection in damp environments.

In the timber industry, decorative European Elm is primarily used for high-end furniture, veneers, cabinetry and architectural panelling where its figured grain can be showcased. It is especially valued in bespoke joinery, luxury interiors and restoration work, where unique grain patterns add visual interest and character. It is also used for statement pieces, turned objects and decorative surfaces, with its rarity and distinctive figuring making it a premium choice for design-led applications.
