Douglas Fir – European

  • Europe
  • Softwood
  • Moderately durable

European Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii, widely referred to as Douglas fir in Europe) is a strong, moderately dense softwood originally native to North America but extensively grown and used across Europe. It has a pale yellow to reddish-brown heartwood with a lighter sapwood, and a generally straight grain with a medium to coarse texture. The wood is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, good dimensional stability and excellent structural performance. It machines reasonably well, though its resin content and occasional hardness variation can affect finishing quality.

In the timber industry, European Douglas fir is widely used for structural construction such as beams, roof trusses, framing, and heavy-duty joinery. It is also employed in flooring, panel products, glulam (glued laminated timber), and exterior applications where strength and reliability are important. Due to its durability and load-bearing capacity, it is a popular choice for both residential and commercial construction, as well as for exposed architectural timber features in modern design.
