Chestnut – Sweet

  • Europe
  • Hardwood
  • Durable

Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) is a durable European hardwood known for its similarity in appearance and performance to oak. It typically has a light to medium golden-brown heartwood, often darkening with age, and a pale sapwood that is clearly defined. The grain is generally straight with a medium to coarse texture, and it frequently contains prominent growth rings and occasional natural fissures. The wood is relatively lightweight compared to oak, easy to machine, and contains high levels of tannin, which contributes to its good natural resistance to decay and insect attack.

In the timber industry, Sweet Chestnut is widely used for exterior joinery, fencing, cladding, garden structures and vineyard stakes due to its durability and weather resistance. It is also employed for interior applications such as flooring, furniture, panelling and beams, particularly in traditional or rustic designs. Its combination of strength, workability and natural durability makes it a versatile timber, especially valued in sustainable construction where long service life without chemical treatment is required.
