Cherry – ENGLISH

  • UK
  • Hardwood
  • Moderately durable

English Cherry (Prunus avium, often referred to as wild cherry) is a fine, decorative hardwood native to Europe. It typically ranges in colour from pale creamy-pink to warm reddish-brown, darkening attractively with age and exposure to light. The wood has a fine, even texture with a straight grain, though it may occasionally show attractive figure such as ripple or curl. It is a medium-density timber that machines and finishes very well, offering a smooth surface and good stability, but it has only moderate natural durability and is best suited to interior use.

In the timber industry, English Cherry is valued for high-quality furniture, cabinetry, veneers and interior joinery where its warm tone and elegant ageing characteristics are desirable. It is commonly used in traditional and bespoke furniture making, as well as for panelling, mouldings and decorative millwork. Its attractive appearance and ease of working make it a popular choice for fine woodworking, particularly in applications where a refined, natural aesthetic is preferred.
