Cherry – American

  • North America
  • Hardwood
  • Moderately durable

American Cherry (Prunus serotina) is a premium hardwood known for its rich, warm colour and fine, even texture. It ranges from pale pinkish-brown when freshly cut to a deep reddish-brown as it ages and is exposed to light, a characteristic that is highly valued in furniture making. The grain is typically straight, though it may occasionally show wavy or curly figure. It is a medium-density timber that machines and finishes exceptionally well, offering excellent workability, smooth surfaces and good dimensional stability, although it is not naturally durable in exposed conditions.

In the timber industry, American Cherry is widely used for high-end furniture, cabinetry, interior joinery and architectural millwork. It is particularly favoured for traditional and contemporary furniture design due to its elegant appearance and ability to develop a rich patina over time. It is also used for veneers, panelling, doors and turned components, where a refined and consistent finish is required. Its combination of workability and aesthetic appeal makes it one of the most sought-after domestic hardwoods in North America.
