Cedar of Lebanon
- Middle East and Europe
- Softwood
- Durable
Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) is a large, slow-growing conifer native to the eastern Mediterranean region. It produces a durable, aromatic softwood that ranges in colour from pale yellow-brown to richer reddish-brown tones. The grain is typically straight with a fine to medium texture, and the wood is relatively stable with good resistance to decay and insect attack. It is moderately lightweight compared to many hardwoods, but stronger and more durable than many other softwoods, especially when properly seasoned.
In the timber industry, Cedar of Lebanon is used primarily for high-quality joinery, interior panelling, cabinetry, veneers and decorative woodworking, where its appearance and fragrance are valued. Historically, it has also been used in construction, shipbuilding and monumental architecture due to its durability and cultural significance. Today, its availability is limited and it is more commonly specified for specialist restoration work, luxury interiors and niche architectural applications rather than large-scale structural use.
