Western Red Cedar (European market reference) is not a distinct European species, but rather Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) imported and widely used across Europe. It is a lightweight softwood with a reddish-brown to pale amber colour and a fine, even texture. The grain is typically straight, and the wood is naturally durable due to its resistance to decay, fungal attack and insect damage. It also offers excellent dimensional stability, meaning it performs well in changing moisture conditions, though its low density makes it relatively soft and susceptible to surface dents and wear.

In the European timber industry, Western Red Cedar is primarily used for exterior cladding, façades, shingles, garden structures and architectural joinery where long-term weather resistance and stability are required. It is also popular for saunas, fencing, decking and decorative interior panelling due to its appearance and pleasant aroma. Its combination of durability and lightweight workability makes it a premium specification material, particularly in sustainable and high-end architectural design.
