Western Red Cedar (American) (Thuja plicata) is a lightweight softwood native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. It ranges in colour from pale amber to rich reddish-brown, often darkening with age, and has a fine, even texture with a straight grain. The wood is naturally durable due to its resistance to decay, moisture and insect attack, despite being relatively soft and low in density. It also has excellent dimensional stability and is easy to cut, shape and finish, though it can be prone to denting due to its softness.

In the timber industry, Western Red Cedar is highly valued for exterior applications such as cladding, shingles, фасcia boards, decking and fencing, where its weather resistance and stability are key advantages. It is also widely used for outdoor structures like garden buildings, pergolas and saunas, as well as interior panelling and feature joinery. Its attractive appearance and natural durability make it a premium choice for architectural and landscaping projects where both performance and aesthetics are important.
