Beech (Fagus sylvatica, European beech, most commonly used in timber form) is a pale cream to light pinkish-brown hardwood with a fine, even texture and a generally straight grain, though it can be slightly wavy or interlocked. It is a heavy, strong and hard timber with good shock resistance and excellent machining properties. Beech bends well under steam and finishes smoothly, but it is not naturally durable and is prone to movement and degradation if exposed to moisture without treatment.
In the timber industry, beech is widely used for furniture, interior joinery, cabinetry, flooring and veneers due to its uniform appearance and reliability in machining and finishing. It is especially valued for turned components, bentwood furniture and tool handles, as well as kitchenware and worktops where its hardness and clean surface are advantageous. Because of its lack of weather resistance, it is primarily reserved for interior applications or protected environments.
