English Ash (Quilted Grain) is a rare and highly decorative form of Fraxinus excelsior distinguished by a striking "quilted" figure, where the grain appears rippled or three-dimensional under light. Like standard English ash, it is a pale creamy-white to light brown hardwood with a coarse, open pore structure and strong ring-porous grain. It retains the species' well-known toughness, good elasticity and excellent strength-to-weight ratio, though the figured grain can make machining slightly more challenging and may require careful tooling to avoid tear-out.

In the timber industry, quilted English ash is primarily used for high-end decorative applications where appearance is paramount. It is sought after for luxury furniture, statement cabinetry, veneers, panelling and bespoke interior joinery, particularly in architectural feature work. Because of its visual impact, it is often used as a show veneer or focal material rather than for structural purposes, combining the practicality of ash with a highly distinctive, premium aesthetic.
