Andiroba
- Central and South America
- Hardwood
- Moderately durable
Andiroba (Carapa guianensis) is a medium-density tropical hardwood native to Central and South America. It has a pale pinkish-brown to reddish-brown heartwood, often with a straight to slightly interlocked grain and a medium to coarse texture. The wood exhibits good dimensional stability, but is more difficult to machine and finish than American mahogany. It offers moderate resistance to decay and insect attack.
In the timber industry, Andiroba is commonly used for furniture, cabinetry, interior joinery, veneers, plywood and general construction. Its attractive appearance and good working properties make it well suited to mouldings, panelling, flooring and boat interiors. While not as naturally durable as some tropical hardwoods used outdoors, Andiroba remains a popular choice for high-quality interior products and decorative applications where stability and ease of manufacture are important.
