- Very durable
Afzelia is a dense and highly durable tropical hardwood found across Africa and Southeast Asia, valued for its exceptional strength, dimensional stability and natural resistance to decay, termites and marine borers. It ranges in colour from golden-brown to reddish-brown and features a moderately coarse texture with an often interlocked grain. Despite its hardness, Afzelia machines and finishes well, producing a smooth surface and exhibiting good performance in demanding environments.
In the timber industry, Afzelia is widely used for heavy-duty and high-end applications, including flooring, furniture, joinery, staircases, veneers and cabinetry. Its outstanding durability and resistance to moisture make it particularly suitable for exterior doors, window frames, decking, bridge construction and marine work. The species is also favoured for decorative and architectural projects where both strength and an attractive appearance are required, making it a premium alternative to teak in many applications.
